The Ending Road

The person is...
And he walks his life...
But he doesn't know when, where and how the road ends.

"It's awesome! Let me do it."
"Look! He's learning fast to walk."
"Sweetheart, let me roll up your sleeves."
"Mummy, I can take care of Miffi."

"I don't like this place, can we go granny?"
"Shut up, Derek! I've nothing to spend."  "It's fucking boring here."
"I've told you not to come along mum! I've told you!"
"Listen! Don't stand in between me and him!"
"Isn't it colourful? The whole place is lit up."
"Get off my way!"
"She's late again! Can't she make a change?"
"Don't bother me. This is my world."
"Sh...sh! This place is forever noisy."
"Listen! You never learn. Forget about that moron!"
"It's gonna be another long hard day in the street."
"I'm taking a break. Take your time!"
"It's so quiet here today, unusual for a Saturday. Fine by me."
"Damn! The rain spoils this Saturday evening. Business is so thin."
"Wish I can stand on the stage of the Opera House one day."
"Give her a round of applause if you think she's good."
Amazing grace...
"Come and try. Best Paella in town! Try before you buy."
"Great to be a student if my parents aren't peasants from the north."
"Please, please, please come in. It's 20% off today. Everything."
"I can eat a tiger. Don't they know lunch should be at 1:00pm?"
"Don't test me. Stay away from me."  "You're calling me a bluff!"
"They're sweet. Believe me. $3 a kilo......OK...Give me a price then."
"Thanks mate. Thanks for the change."
"What's she selling?" "Some wild vegetables I think."
"No. 8 of race 3 is hot, sure win..."
"Those boxes are mine, don't touch 'em!"
"Come, best vegetables in the market... What're you doing? Take that camera away."
"Don't cry my dear. Mummy's gone, mummy's gone."
"What if I...?"
"It's a long road."
"The fingers are hurting me."
"It's worse here than back home."
"Where should I go?"
"Stop taking pictures of him! He's embarrassed."
"He's there every afternoon."
"They're having a great time there. Should I go and have a look?"
"The next stop is the last, do you think someone would wake him up?"
"I'm 87."  "And you're working hard!"  "You can do anything if you're hungry."
"Be careful madam, it's slippery."

"The final stop is Botanical Garden. All passengers alight here. This is Botanical Garden."
"Beanie, let's have some sunshine here."
"It's my favourite hobby and this is my second wife, a better one."
"She's still got good eyesight huh!"
"I'll show this to my old man in the nursing home next week. He will love it."
"They'll do the right hip in May. The other one hasn't got a date yet." "Are they hurting?"
"Susan, we used to walk down the beach every Sunday morning. Now, I only have Cesar."
"I miss my mum and dad... a lot....but they'll never return."
"Sweetie, I wish you a bright future."

"Beebee, don't go out! Come back in to granny."
"Dare to live and dare to love?"

    1. Autumn, thanks for the kind words.
The photos are just random snapshots taken at different places over ten years. Didn't know what to do with them at first. So it is a kind of recycling of rejected shots! Some were taken in Scotland last year, can you spot them?

    2. I really love your portraits ! I really appreciate it !! I hope I dare to take a shot on other people without them pointing a finger on me haha (^O^)Also, my iPad can hear your song .....amazing ! How did you do it ? I can't hear my own music which I put on my blog using iPad ah !?

    3. I guess it is rather "dangerous" to point the camera at others and one may either get thumped or sued by doing so these days. So, I'm refraining myself to do it now la. Have a great Sunday.

    1. Wel.............come 翔流! The lyrics of the Chinese song does seem on the negative side. This is one of my two most loved songs of Leslie Cheung. I'm not too sure if I am positive or negative; probably I'm both! I see the negative side of things but that also reminds me to be positive for things I still have. Sorry, don't worry if you don't know what I mean because I myself don't too!
Oh, you are definitely a sensitive man!

  3. It may be a hard fact that to be born is to start the journey towards death. But it doesn't help at all to calculate how long or short the path of life is, for the journey will end anyway someday. As Barack Obama puts it: we have to recognize our own mortality, and be reminded that in the fleeting time we have on this Earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame – but rather, how well we have loved, and what small part we have played in making the lives of other people better.
And let's take heed of what Buddha says: In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.
And remember this too: The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.

    1. Thanks for the words of wisdom and highlighting what I was trying to make sense of my thoughts when I put the photos together. The song and the lyrics just popped up afterwards when I was reading a writing of fellow blogger Joyce on Leslie Cheung. It happens to be one of his favourite songs of mine.
Quite true, the road twists and turns and we can only learn from the journey. By Buddha's standards, I have miles to learn!

  4. We all once in a while can't help wondering how, where and how it ends, I suppose.
We were born, we live and then, well, we die. What matters the most is what a difference our existence has made in others' lives.
I wanted to share the following poem with you. I first heard it recited at a Jewish funeral.

Life is a Journey by Alvin Fine

    Birth is a beginning and death a destination;
    But life is a journey.
A going, a growing from stage to stage:
From childhood to maturity and youth to old age.

    From innocence to awareness and ignorance to knowing;
From foolishness to discretion and then perhaps, to wisdom.
From weakness to strength or strength to weakness and often back again.
From health to sickness and back we pray, to health again.

From offense to forgiveness, from loneliness to love,
From joy to gratitude, from pain to compassion.
    From grief to understanding, from fear to faith;
From defeat to defeat to defeat, until, looking backward or ahead:

We see that victory lies not at some high place along the way,
But in having made the journey, stage by stage, a sacred pilgrimage.
    Birth is a beginning and death a destination;
But life is a journey, a sacred pilgrimage,
Made stage by stage...To life everlasting.

    1. Crystal,
Thanks very much for sharing this great poem with me. I like it the first time I read it. The words are crystal clear and powerful I must say. Your sympathy and encouragement are well taken. I'm OK, just trying to take things easy.
Somehow, the words of the poem resonate with what Peter wrote upstairs and I guess these are the things we all have to learn in this sacred pilgrimage. We all slip and fall from time to time in this long(hopefully) journey and it is great to have people around who can share their hope and understanding at these moments.

    2. Glad that you like it. The first time I heard it, it was recited by a rabbi in a funeral and I liked it. So, I searched for it online. About this long life, well, I've come to realize these several years that life is actually short, very short and no body promised you that life is easy. Somehow, we survive.

  5. Like your photos: they're moving. Not because of their technical brilliance but because they're about real life people in their unguarded moments: all kinds of people in all kinds of conditions. Yet we all share one common humanity, something far too many forget as they hurry through the the hustle and bustle of life. Many live, work and die without ever bothering to spend time doing what's most important: to feel for and with those around us. So happy You're one of the rare exceptions.

    1. EL Zorro, I'm really grateful that you see through the photos and share some of my thoughts and sentiments I had when I was putting all these photos together. I wasn't in my best form when I wrote this piece and that causes a pessimistic hue over the whole writing. Some friends have been worrying about me. But I agree that we often miss out a huge chunk of humanity in our busy life to the struggle for more of everything. And, I can't agree with you more that it is important to feel for and with those around us. You do a much better job than me though, with your philosophical mind and objective seeing of the world.
PS I You sharing on the films is something! Just not quite capable to respond though.

In No. 11, you feel sympathy for the gentleman because you're frequent same as him. You're right. Don't bother anybody when he is reading. I'll take the photo No. 16 to my learned brother & ask him a question. Where's the street in photo 18? The fat woman seems to keep Harry Potter's house in photo No. 19. Is it Scotland in No. 21 ? Thank you for cheering me up with some of the photos here. Just you let you know that I am OK and I know I have to take care of myself.
I think I can find a little of myself in each of these photos. I took these photos in different places in the past 2 years except No. 43, 52, 53 and 54. They were taken 10 years ago in the poor mountain areas in 廣西。I only spoke with the persons in No. 43 and 52. The parents of the boy in 52 disappeared after he was born and he is an orphan. An orphan in a very poor area of the countryside!
And yes, you are right! I'm somehow like 39!
I did not know this writing ends up being quite sad when I put the pictures together. I decided to write this piece after reading your writing about Leslie Cheung and the music just keep spinning in my head. I think it is good to get it out and I want to share how I have been seeing life until now. Some friends are worrying about me but I am fine.
You take good care of yourself and have a great week.

I should like to offer my apology for my fault to downlad your blog's photo (i.e. Winter illusion dd June 29, 2009) at yahoo without your knowldege at the end of 2012. At that time, I didn't learn you're so gentle until I requested for your icon. I'm having oil-painting lesson this evening, my teacher suddenly enquired me where to get the picture ? I told her the fact & she pointed out my mistake. I'm so sorry to offend you & can't go on my oil-painting without your approval but I've finished 3/4. Please don't lie yourself and I learn you're very busy, please reply to me on or before next Friday. Please forgive me. Have a nice weekend !

A book and a cup of tea will be nice in the weekend after a week's busy work but it's difficult to make that happens for myself and will be something I want to work towards achieving this year. Hope you settle down and have some rest before starting a new journey - you are so lucky to follow your dream.
